The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo opened in June, 1989 as Zooland Animal Park, just a few blocks from the beach in Gulf Shores.  Today it is home to more than 300 animals, including lions, tigers, bears, monkeys and macaws.  It's open to visitors every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.  In coming years, it will write a new chapter in its history as it transitions to a new location.  The recent donation of 25 acres on higher ground by Gulf Shores businessman, Clyde Weir and his daughter Andrea Weir Franklin, will secure the zoo's future.

Explore the grounds of historic Fort Morgan. Guides and enactors will explain how the Spanish used Fort Morgan in the 1500's, and then rebuilt it in the early 1800's as protection against Native Americans. Standing atop the fort with a view of the once-embattled bay, visitors can imagine the summer of 1864 when Confederate and Union naval forces fought for control of the harbor entrance. A living history program is conducted daily during the summer. Candlelight fort tours are held Tuesday evenings in the summer. Children's Day Camps offered various time during the summer.  Call for schedule and details.
